Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Ahmad Zahid Hamidi announced that starting January 1st, 2025, all motorcycles sold in Malaysia with an engine capacity of 150 cc and above must be equipped with anti-lock braking systems (ABS).
Speaking at the Conference on Asian Road Safety (CARS), Zahid expressed confidence that this requirement will significantly reduce road traffic deaths in Malaysia and could inspire other ASEAN countries to adopt similar safety measures.
Zahid, who also chairs the Malaysian Cabinet Committee on Road Safety and Traffic Congestion, highlighted that motorcycle ABS has been shown to reduce motorcyclist fatalities in road accidents by 31%.
The conference was attended by Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook and Human Resources Minister Steven Sim Chee Keong, according to local reports.
