An extended-range EV (EREV) version of the BAIC BJ40, known as the BJ40e, will debut and open for pre-sales during the Guangzhou Auto Show, beginning on 15th November.

The BJ40e offers a 155 km all-electric range and a total range exceeding 1,200 km.

Visually, the BJ40e closely resembles the ICE model of the SUV, with the main differences being a charging port on the opposite side of the fuel tank and a new BJ40e badge.

There is a slight height difference, with the new version measuring 1,930 mm or 1,964 mm with the roof rack, compared to the petrol version's 1,895 mm. The length (4,790 mm), width (1,940 mm), and wheelbase (2,760 mm) remain unchanged.

The BJ40 is a true body-on-frame off-roader produced by BAIC, and the BJ40e uses the Taiji flexible off-road chassis, with the battery pack secured via flexible suspension. This installation method provides cushioning in the event of a roll or impact.

It is powered by a 40.3 kWh ternary lithium battery. However, the platform operates at 400V with a charging power of only 50 kW, resulting in a 30-80% SoC charge time of 30 minutes. Its long overall range is largely attributed to an 82-litre fuel tank rather than advanced EREV technology.

The BJ40e's approach angle is 38 degrees, and its departure angle is 37 degrees.

It features 20-inch alloy wheels, which differentiate it from the ICE version.

The vehicle is equipped with a four-cylinder 1.5T engine producing a maximum power of 115 kW, and a power generation efficiency of 97.5% is claimed.

Furthermore, during high-speed driving, it generates continuous power at 90 kW, allowing it to maintain battery power even at speeds of up to 145 km/h.

As an EREV, the BJ40e lacks a drive shaft and is instead equipped with dual motors. The motor's dynamic torque distribution speed is faster than a traditional ICE setup, with a response time within 60ms.

Additionally, the wheel-end torque reaches 9,000 Nm, making it particularly adept at getting out of challenging conditions. Currently, detailed specifications of the electric motors powering the BJ40e are unavailable.

The BJ40e includes an all-terrain drive system with 11 selectable modes.

Inside, the BJ40e features a three-screen layout. This includes dual 12.8-inch infotainment and passenger screens that seamlessly integrate, along with a 10.25-inch instrument panel for the driver. The system is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 chip.

Comfort features include heated, ventilated, and massaging seats, as well as a heated, electrically adjustable steering wheel.

Additional details about the BJ40e are expected to be revealed at the Guangzhou Auto Show. The ICE version of the second-generation BJ40, launched in 2023, is currently only available with a 2.0T petrol engine.
