As the name suggests, the M 1000 XR is based on the BMW S 1000 XR, which is a tall sport tourer or crossover style of motorcycle.
The 2024 version of the BMW S 1000 XR (not yet available in India) makes 172 PS, while the M model gets an engine derived from the S 1000 RR superbike.
With BMW's ShiftCam variable valve timing/lift technology as well as other exotica like titanium valves, this motor produces 204 PS and 113 Nm. That makes the M 1000 XR the world's most powerful touring machine.
The bike also gets a larger rear sprocket and shorter 4th, 5th and 6th gear ratios for even harder acceleration. BMW claims a 0-100kph time of 3.2s and a top speed of 278kph.
In typical M fashion, the XR gets a bigger set of wings, a striking motorsport livery and more sporty electronic suspension as well as the superb M brakes from the M 1000 RR.
The ergos are also revised for a more sporty level of connection, but both the handlebar and foot peg placement will still be on the comfortable/practical end of the spectrum. It is a large bike with a 20-litre fuel tank and an 850mm seat height.
BMW M 1000 XR is chock-filled with electronic rider assists at a similar level as the full-on M 1000 RR superbike. The highlights include multiple riding modes, launch control, a pitlane speed limiter, Race ABS and more. However, the bike still has creature comforts like heated grips, cruise control and tyre pressure monitoring.
The Indian market only gets the M Competition version which packs in plenty of goodies like carbon-fibre wheels, billet M rider and passenger footrests, an M GPS lap timer and liberal lashings of carbon-fibre body work all over. The net result is a 223kg kerb weight, which is about 3kg lighter than the S 1000 XR.
At Rs 4.5 million (US$ 55,000) (ex-showroom, India), the M 1000 XR sits between the M 1000 R Rs. 3.5 million - 4 million and the M 1000 RR Rs. 5 million - 5.5 million.
