Government expands PM e-Bus Sewa with tender for 10,900 electric buses
New Indian Express, 29 Oct '25
India is undergoing a transformation in its public transportation sector, with the Government focusing on sustainable and zero-emission mobility solutions.
The country's electric mobility transition is progressing steadily. To advance the Union Government's target of achieving Net Zero Emissions by 2070, the National Movement for PM e-Drive and PM e-Bus Sewa is gaining nationwide traction.
Convergence Energy Services Limited (CESL), a Government of India enterprise under the Ministry of Power, has received a strong response to its tender for 10,900 electric buses under the Prime Minister's PM e-Bus Sewa programme.
The tender, covering five major metropolitan cities, is the largest electric bus procurement initiative undertaken in India so far.
In a release issued on October 26th, EESL National Advisor A. Chandra Sekhara Reddy stated that the pre-bid phase saw participation from major domestic and international manufacturers. Following clarifications to pre-bid queries, CESL extended the bid submission deadline to November 2025, with the bid opening scheduled for November 6th, 2025.
Identifying Andhra Pradesh as one of the states with a strong record in implementing energy efficiency, renewable energy, e-mobility, and energy transition measures, CESL has begun formulating an action plan for the time-bound implementation of e-mobility in the state.
In the first phase, CESL will focus on Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Rajahmundry, Nellore, and Tirupati.
A CESL spokesperson acknowledged the steps taken by the Andhra Pradesh Government towards achieving complete electrification of the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) fleet.
