The third-generation Mazda CX-5 is expected to achieve 60% local content once local assembly begins in Malaysia, with the localisation programme intended to expand the participation of Malaysian automotive suppliers in Mazda's supply chain.

The Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) said the localisation of the new CX-5 is part of efforts to develop Malaysia as a manufacturing and export base for Mazda. The programme is also expected to enable Malaysian automotive suppliers to participate more extensively in Mazda's supply chain and develop capabilities for regional and global automotive supply networks.

The third-generation CX-5 will be launched in the Malaysian market on October 8th this year. It is expected to initially arrive as a fully imported completely built-up (CBU) model, before local completely knocked-down (CKD) assembly begins approximately 12 to 16 months later. Once CKD production starts, the SUV is expected to reach the 60% local-content level.

To support the localisation programme, MIDA and Bermaz Auto have brought together 16 Malaysian automotive vendors through the MIDA-Mazda Strategic Vendor Development and Supply Chain Programme. Five memorandums of understanding (MoUs) have also been exchanged between Malaysian and Japanese companies.

The participating vendors operate across sectors including chassis and suspension, stamping, precision machining, plastic injection moulding, cockpit modules, seating systems and insulation components.

The third-generation Mazda CX-5 was previewed in June this year at the Kuala Lumpur International Mobility Show (KLIMS) and is currently available for booking, with pricing estimated to start from MYR 170,000 (US$ 42,000).

Bermaz Auto executive chairman Tan Sri Ben Yeoh previously revealed that the new CX-5 would be offered in Malaysia exclusively with a 2.5-litre engine. This is likely to be the newer e-Skyactiv G powertrain, comprising a naturally aspirated petrol inline-four-cylinder engine paired with a 24-volt mild-hybrid system. It produces 141 PS and 238 Nm and drives the front wheels through a six-speed Skyactiv-Drive automatic transmission.

The third-generation CX-5 measures 4,690 mm in length, 1,860 mm in width and 1,695 mm in height, with a 2,815 mm wheelbase. Compared with its predecessor, it is 115 mm longer, 15 mm wider and 15 mm taller, while the wheelbase is also 115 mm longer.

Inside, the SUV features a central touchscreen measuring either 12.9 inches or 15.6 inches, with the larger display fitted to the Malaysian preview unit. The previous Mazda Connect system, along with its associated Commander Control rotary dial and physical-button interface, has been replaced by an infotainment system based on Android Automotive OS. The third-generation CX-5 also features a wireless device charger.
