Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles (TMPV) and its subsidiary Jaguar Land Rover Automotive commenced operations at their new manufacturing facility in Panapakkam, Ranipet district, Tamil Nadu, on February 9th, 2026. The first vehicle to roll out of the plant is the Range Rover Evoque, which will be manufactured locally for Jaguar Land Rover.
The facility was formally inaugurated by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and Tata Sons Chairman N. Chandrasekaran, in the presence of state ministers, government officials, and senior executives from TMPV, JLR and the Tata Group.
The Panapakkam plant marks the first phase of a greenfield manufacturing project intended to produce next-generation vehicles, including electric vehicles, for both Tata Motors and Jaguar Land Rover brands. According to company statements, production will be ramped up progressively to reach the plant's designed annual capacity of 250,000 vehicles over the next five to seven years, serving both domestic and international markets.
Tata Motors plans to invest approximately Rs. 90 billion (US$ 992.52 million) in the facility as part of its long-term growth strategy. The plant is expected to generate more than 5,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities and support the development of a local ancillary supplier ecosystem.
The workforce includes shopfloor technicians from across Tamil Nadu who have undergone training under Tata Motors' Lakshya programme. The initiative provides five months of hands-on training at JLR facilities and offers participants the opportunity to pursue a company-sponsored B.Tech degree while employed.
The facility incorporates multiple sustainability features. Company officials stated that the plant has been designed to operate entirely on renewable energy and to be water positive, with manufacturing processes aligned with global environmental standards.
Chief Minister Stalin said the commissioning of the facility represents a significant milestone for Tamil Nadu's automotive manufacturing sector. Chairman Chandrasekaran described the plant as an important step in the Tata Group's efforts to advance sustainable and technology-driven manufacturing in India.
Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, part of the US$ 180 billion Tata Group, manufactures cars and SUVs in India across multiple powertrain options, including electric vehicles. Jaguar Land Rover, a wholly owned subsidiary of TMPV, operates manufacturing facilities in the UK, China, Slovakia, India and Brazil, supported by technology hubs worldwide.
