Tesla Nepal has partnered with the carmaker's parent company in the U.S. to secure official distribution and dealership rights, enabling their EVs to be officially sold in the Nepali market.
According to CEO Surendra Koirala, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed with Tesla headquarters in Texas, USA, after four years of negotiations for distribution rights.
The agreement ensures that experience centres, service centres, and charging networks will operate in accordance with Tesla's 'standard operating procedures'. The distributors have begun the process of opening letters of credit (LC) to import 50 units of popular Tesla models during the initial phase, with the vehicles expected to arrive in Nepal by the end of February.
Furthermore, Tesla Nepal has signed agreements with Tesla Singapore and Tesla Hong Kong to establish and manage customer service, after-sales service, charging networks, and experience centres.
Tesla Nepal has started construction of its first showroom in Baluwatar, Kathmandu, and is also working on a second showroom in Jhamsikhel, Lalitpur.
The service centre will be located on a 3 Ropani plot of land in Ekantakuna, which will include five Tesla Superchargers. Tesla Nepal has also outlined plans to expand its network to Kathmandu, Pokhara, Chitwan, Butwal, Biratnagar, and Jhapa over the next ten years.
Although Tesla EVs have been available in Nepal since 2020, there were no authorised distributors at the time. Arete International imported Tesla vehicles independently, and as a result, the Teslas imported by Arete were subject to a 30% penalty on the retail price.
This resulted in the entry-level Tesla Model 3 being sold at a premium.
With Tesla Nepal now holding authorised distribution rights, future imports of Tesla vehicles will be priced according to factory-manufactured prices, leading to a reduction of up to 40% in the prices of Tesla models, along with the provision of after-sales services.
