Thai motorcycle sales jump back in November
After a long and challenging year, the local motorcycle market finally bounced back in November, with a 9% increase from the previous month.
A total of 130,264 units of new motorcycle registrations were recorded in November, up 4% compared with the same period of last year.
Market leader Honda held a 68% share and sold 88,900 units, a 15% rise from October and an 11% rise year-on-year. Helped by the introduction of the Scoopy retro motorbike, Honda held 51% of the market for automatic transmission (AT) models with 31,317 units sold.
Since the global and local economies have picked up speed and the government has encouraged more spending, consumers' confidence has been restored, resulting in a higher revenue in November, said Teerapat Chivaphong, sales director of A.P. Honda.
The company believes its new PCX model will strengthen Honda even further, as it was a world-class scooter manufactured in Thailand for the global market. "The scooter will not only strengthen our name as a leader in the AT market but also become an alternative for our customers, covering every market segment," he said.
Of the 130,264 motorcycle units registered in November, 63,240 were family type models, 61,348 were AT models, 2,968 were family/sport models, 894 units were sports bikes and 1,814 were in other categories.
For the year to November 30th, registrations totalled 1.39 million units, a 13% year-on-year decrease.
In the first 11 months, Honda had a 66% market share or 915,172 units sold, followed by Yamaha with 28% or 388,284 units, Suzuki 4% or 58,169 units, Kawasaki 1% or 13,247 units, JRD with 1,499, Platinum with 1,003, Tiger with 999 and other brands totalling 9,816 units sold.
