VKTR, Transjakarta accelerate electric commercial transport transition

VKTR Teknologi Mobilitas (VKTR) is working to accelerate the electrification of commercial transportation, while Transportasi Jakarta (Transjakarta) is expanding its electric bus fleet as part of Jakarta's transition to electric public transport.
VKTR Director Erika M. Hamizar said commercial vehicles have an important role in reducing fossil fuel consumption because of their high utilisation rates.
"Commercial vehicles have a very high utilisation rate. Electrifying a single bus or truck can replace a significant amount of fuel consumption annually, so the economic efficiency impact can be felt more quickly and measurably," she said, as quoted in an official statement on September 1st, 2026.
Erika said the transition to electric vehicles should also be used to strengthen Indonesia's domestic manufacturing capabilities and human resources. She said the development of the electric vehicle ecosystem should progress through four main stages: building the industry, improving the quality of human resources, creating markets and ultimately increasing national competitiveness.
VKTR said electric buses and trucks could be used in Indonesia's public transport, logistics and industrial sectors. In public transportation, bus electrification could reduce greenhouse gas emissions in urban areas. In logistics and industrial operations, electric trucks could help reduce operating costs for businesses while meeting demand for more environmentally friendly supply chains.
However, VKTR said accelerating the transition would require collaboration between the government, transport operators, industry players and infrastructure providers.
"The government plays a crucial role in establishing consistent regulations and a conducive market climate, including prioritising local products. By synergising with operators and industry, commercial vehicle electrification can proceed more rapidly," Erika said.
Transjakarta is implementing an electric public transport programme through fleet rejuvenation, procurement of new electric buses and retrofit programmes. Transjakarta Director of Operations and Safety Mohamad Deddy Gamawan said the company is targeting the transformation of 96% of existing operator contracts to electric vehicles by 2030.
"By 2030, 96% of existing operator contracts are targeted to have been transformed to use electric vehicles," Deddy said, as reported on the official website of the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government on August 31st, 2026.
Transjakarta currently operates around 500 electric buses across its network. The fleet is expected to expand as part of Jakarta's public transport electrification target. The programme also supports the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government's target of having 50% pollution-free public transport by 2027 and 100% by 2030. Transjakarta's transition includes the procurement of new electric buses and a retrofit programme to convert existing vehicles to electric power.
Transjakarta currently provides services across 92% of Jakarta through 240 routes. Its network includes bus rapid transit (BRT), feeder services, Mikrotrans, Transjabodetabek, buses serving residential flats, Royaltrans and other special services.
The company is also expanding its service coverage and integrating its network with other modes of transport. The network development is intended to improve first- and last-mile connectivity, allowing passengers to connect journeys from their point of departure to their final destination.
Integration has also been implemented with several transport hubs, including Jakarta MRT stations and the Greater Jakarta LRT. Alongside physical and route integration, Transjakarta has introduced cross-modal fare integration, with a maximum fare of IDR 10,000 (US$ 0.55) for journeys of up to 180 minutes.
"Integration is not just about connecting stops or routes, but also about facilitating passenger transfers between modes," Deddy said.
The developments at VKTR and Transjakarta cover the expansion of electric vehicles in commercial and public transport fleets, as well as the development of domestic manufacturing, workforce and infrastructure capabilities required to support the transition.
