In a significant step towards modernising public transportation, Allison Transmission has partnered with Ashok Leyland, the Hinduja Group's flagship company, to introduce Tamil Nadu's first low-floor city buses equipped with fully automatic transmissions.
The new fleet comprises Ashok Leyland's 12-metre stepless-entry diesel buses fitted with Allison's Torqmatic Series transmissions, specifically the T 280 model. This collaboration marks a shift from manual to automatic transmissions, aiming to improve accessibility and enhance passenger experience, especially for individuals with disabilities.
These buses are powered by Ashok Leyland's durable H-series six-cylinder, four-valve engine, delivering 184 kw (246 PS), and assembled at Allison's manufacturing facility near Chennai.
Heidi Schutte, Vice President of EMEA, APAC, and South America Sales at Allison Transmission, commented, "This is a major step forward in our efforts to lead the transition to fully automatic transmissions in India. We're pleased to play an integral role in advancing transportation in the state of Tamil Nadu and look forward to continued partnership with Ashok Leyland and transit customers across the country."
With this launch, Allison Transmission reinforces its leadership in India's low-floor city bus segment, underscoring its commitment to providing enhanced reliability, smoother operations, and greater accessibility in public transportation.
