Basic Energy unveils electric jeepney at Philippine EV Summit

Basic Energy Corporation's (BEC) Basic GEEP electric jeepney was displayed at the 13th Philippine Electric Vehicle Summit (PEVS), held at the SMX Convention Centre, in line with the Government's Public Utility Vehicle (PUV) modernisation initiative.
Part of BEC's Green Energy E-Transport Programme (GEEP), the vehicle marks the company's entry into the electric public transport segment.
During the summit, the company outlined the vehicle's technical features and supporting infrastructure.
Technical specifications
The Basic GEEP is equipped with a 50 kW rated electric motor with a peak output of 110 kW, paired with a 66 kWh battery pack.
According to information shared by the company at the event, the model has an estimated range of 180 to 200 kilometres per charge, allowing the completion of multiple routes without mid-day recharging.
The model is built on a light cargo truck platform chassis supplied by an international original equipment manufacturer (OEM).
Its motor and battery are housed in IP67-rated enclosures designed to resist dust and water immersion, in consideration of the country's road and weather conditions, particularly during the monsoon season.
Standard equipment includes onboard GPS tracking, passenger Wi-Fi connectivity, and an automated fare collection system, in line with the Government's move towards digital payment integration within public transport services.
Operational costs and infrastructure plans
Company representatives at the booth stated an estimated 50-60% reduction in operational costs compared with diesel-powered jeepneys, citing lower electricity expenses, reduced maintenance requirements, and a battery leasing model. Pricing details relating to vehicle acquisition and battery lease terms were not disclosed during the event.
The GEEP Programme includes plans for a charging network named Basic Recharge, which will reportedly use solar-powered stations.
Information regarding the number of planned sites, their locations, and rollout timelines has not yet been provided.
The Basic GEEP enters a market with several manufacturers participating in the PUV modernisation programme.
The Government's initiative, which involves replacing ageing jeepneys with alternatives that meet set safety and environmental standards, continues to face implementation challenges, including affordability and financing matters raised by transport groups.
The summit featured various electric mobility solutions, and the participation of traditional jeepney operators and transport cooperatives indicated measured interest in electric alternatives. The adoption of vehicles such as the Basic GEEP will depend on factors including Government subsidies, access to financing, and the development of charging infrastructure.
The 13th PEVS presented ongoing developments in the sector and highlighted the extent of work required to modernise the country's public transport system.
