Beijing Foton Cummins starts making ISG series engines in China
China Automotive Review, 17 Jun '14

The Cummins ISG series heavy-duty engines rolled off the production line in the new plant of Beijing Foton Cummins Engine Co. recently, according to a company press release.

The inline six-cylinder Cummins ISG heavy-duty engine provides two options at current stage, the ISG11L and ISG12L with a power range of 310-512 hp, which meet various demand and different emissions standards of the world market.

Designed and developed by the Cummins team in the U.S., the ISG engine endured 60,000 hours of bench testing and over 6 million kilometres road testing during the five-year R&D process. The engine complies with the Euro-IV, Euro-V and State-IV emissions standards currently and is able to be upgraded into Euro-VI compliant based on the same platform.

The ISG series engine reduces auto part use by 50 percent with high liability. Braking efficiency increase 25-50 percent compared with that of the normal cylinder.

With high-efficiency fuel injection technology, the engine can start in 7 seconds under -35℃ conditions.

The birth of ISG marks that Cummins has tailor-made an innovative and green heavy-duty power engine for the China market, said Tom Linebarger, chairman and CEO of Cummins.

Cummins and Beiqi-Foton Motor (Foton) started the ISG engine project as early as in 2010. With an investment of ¥2.2 billion (US$ 353 million), the plant takes up 66,000 square metres with installed capacity of 60,000 units at current stage and 120,000 units in the future.

Auman GTL

Foton also launched its Foton-Daimler Auman GTL heavy-duty truck on the same day. Equipped with the ISG engine, the heavy-duty truck made five breakthroughs in fuel-saving, safety, reliability, comfort and comprehensive operation cost.

Foton also signed an LNG clean energy technology innovation project agreement with Cummins to get prepared for emissions standards upgrading. The heavy-duty engine platform owns broad market prospect and can be expanded into non-road, electricity and clean energy fields.

Cummins and Beijing Foton Cummins have also signed an agreement on the development of non-road (EPA Tier 4 Final/EU Stage IV) and road Euro-VI emissions standards engines, according to the company.
