Lanka Ashok Leyland, a unit of India's Ashok Leyland and a commercial vehicle distributor that also assembles vehicles in Sri Lanka, has announced plans to expand its export operations and is currently exploring markets in Africa.
The company reported export revenues of LKR 140 million (US$ 463,025) in 2025, compared to LKR 255 million in the previous year, with the majority of shipments destined for the Maldives.
"To further support national economic recovery and enhance industry competitiveness, the company has also commenced laying the groundwork to develop export capabilities," Lanka Ashok Leyland stated in its annual report to shareholders.
"Initial consignments were delivered to the Maldives, and exploratory efforts have begun to assess market opportunities in right-hand drive countries across Africa. Although still at an early stage, exports remain a key component of the company's long-term growth strategy. This initiative represents a significant milestone in expanding the company's regional presence and highlights its ability to meet international standards in vehicle assembly. The export activities not only contribute to Sri Lanka's foreign exchange reserves but also underscore the reliability and performance of the company's products in competitive overseas markets," the company further added.
Lanka Ashok Leyland also noted that it is introducing electric commercial vehicles to the Sri Lankan market.
