Mercedes-Benz Malaysia, which is celebrating its 10th year anniversary this year, is investing another RM 100 million (US$ 31.9 million) to upgrade its assembly plant in Pekan, Pahang over the next five years.

"The investment, which will begin this year, is in line with new model introductions and will be geared towards advancing the plant to accommodate these additions.

"At present, the plant assembles the coveted Mercedes-Benz S-Class, E-Class and C-Class passenger vehicles," Vice President, Product Plant Sebastian Streuff told reporters visiting the plant here today.

Since 2004, the company has invested about RM 250 million in the plant.

Located 300 kilometres from Kuala Lumpur and 40 kilometres south of Kuantan, it also assembles Mercedes-Benz and Mitsubishi FUSO commercial vehicles.

Streuff said since establishing itself in Pekan in 2005, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia has steadily increased its output to meet market demand.

As of April 2013, the plant has produced 29,084 passenger vehicles and over 15,174 commercial vehicles, he said.

Located in the Automotive Park in Pekan, the plant is strategically located with infrastructure and suitable manufacturing partners such as DRB-Hicom and Suzuki nearby.

The company, which has 1,200 employees, has successfully established its plant to become the assembly hub for the Malaysian market.

Besides Malaysia, Mercedes-Benz also has plants in Brunei, Singapore and Indonesia.
