As the initial deliveries of the Xpeng G6 commence for Australian customers, it has been confirmed that the ambitious Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer will have four operational showrooms across New South Wales (NSW) and Victoria by the end of 2024.
Furthermore, an additional 20 locations are planned to open by the end of 2025.
Xpeng's Australian distributor, TrueEV, previously announced a flagship showroom located at Sydney Airport's domestic precinct. This will be complemented by "experience centres" opening in December in Wollongong, NSW, and the Melbourne suburbs of Port Melbourne and North Coburg.
The arrival of Xpeng, initially with the G6 - a competitor to the Tesla Model Y - signals the beginning of a substantial expansion of Chinese EV brands in Australia, seeking to emulate the success of BYD.
Other brands poised for entry include Deepal, Geely, and Leapmotor. Although the precise locations of the additional 20 sites have not been disclosed, TrueEV has stated that they will be "strategically positioned to provide maximum accessibility and convenience for customers."
A map on the Xpeng Australia website indicates that new showrooms will be added in NSW and Victoria, with coverage expanding to Queensland, South Australia (SA), Western Australia (WA), Tasmania, and the Australian Capital Territory (ACT).
Customers may choose to collect their new vehicles from one of the newly established "experience centres" or opt for home delivery.
The Xpeng map also confirms the opening of a showroom at Crown Sydney in Barangaroo and a flagship experience centre at Kingsway in Melbourne, both scheduled for 2025. The Port Melbourne facility, opening this month, is designated as a "fulfilment centre."
Planned locations in NSW include the Inner West, Chatswood on the North Shore, the Hills District in the North West, and Parramatta and Liverpool in the West.
In Victoria, pending sites include Burwood and Berwick in the outer East. Queensland will see sites in Brisbane City, Springwood, and the Sunshine Coast.
WA will host four sites: Perth, Midland, Mornington, and Melville. SA's designated location is Adelaide CBD, Tasmania's is Hobart, and the ACT's is Canberra.
TrueEV has stated that the new centres opening this month will enable customers to test-drive vehicles, serve as delivery hubs, and offer "after-sales experiences," including vehicle servicing.
Additionally, TrueEV has partnered with the Ultra Tune network to provide servicing for Xpeng vehicles.
"Following our announcement of the Xpeng Sydney flagship showroom, we are pleased to reveal the opening of three experience centre locations before the end of 2024," stated Jason Clarke, CEO of TrueEV.
"These showrooms are designed to offer an immersive and engaging environment where customers can experience the latest Xpeng technology and electric vehicles, supported by a dedicated on-site team. Our aim is to seamlessly integrate innovation and style, creating a future where technology and luxury co-exist," he further added.
The G6 is priced competitively below the Tesla Model Y, starting at AUD 54,800 (US$ 35,000) plus on-road costs.
It is anticipated that the G6 will be followed in the Australian market in 2026 by the G9 large SUV. The P9 large people-mover is also featured on the Xpeng Australia website, although no details regarding its local release have been announced.
