Chinese electric vehicle (EV) brand Zeekr is preparing to make a significant impact on the Australian EV market, positioning itself as a premium alternative to other mainstream EV brands.
According to Connal Yan, Zeekr's managing director, the brand aims to target the upper end of the mainstream market.
While Zeekr does not intend to compete directly with luxury brands such as BMW and Mercedes-Benz, it seeks to occupy a niche where Chinese EV brands have not traditionally ventured - offering high-quality vehicles with a premium feel. The goal is to appeal to discerning consumers interested in advanced, tech-forward options at more accessible prices than the ultra-luxury segment.
Zeekr's strategy includes a diverse lineup of electric cars designed to attract buyers who may also be considering premium EVs from brands such as Hyundai, Kia, and Volvo, with the ambition to surpass the sales volume of established automakers. This market approach places Zeekr in direct competition with other well-known EV brands, aiming to become a strong contender in Australia's rapidly evolving EV market.
Founded in 2021, Zeekr is a premium electric vehicle brand and a subsidiary of the Chinese automotive giant Geely. Zeekr benefits from Geely's substantial resources and technology-sharing opportunities within its extensive network, which includes major brands like Volvo, Polestar, Lotus, Lynk & Co, and Proton, as well as significant stakes in Daimler (its second-largest shareholder) and Aston Martin (its third-largest shareholder).
This ownership structure allows Zeekr to leverage established expertise in design, manufacturing, and advanced EV technology, positioning it strongly within the premium segment of the EV market.
With a focus on high-end features and appealing design, Zeekr aims to make a notable entry into the Australian market, targeting buyers seeking a blend of luxury and cutting-edge technology in the EV space. The 009 people mover, likely to compete with other premium MPVs, will further extend Zeekr's appeal to both family and business markets, enhancing its presence and ambitions in Australia.
In Australia, the Zeekr X is positioning itself within the competitive premium EV market alongside other Geely-owned models, such as the Volvo EX30, Smart #3, and Polestar 2. Despite this overlap in ownership, Connal Yan clarifies that Zeekr is not focused on directly competing with its sister companies. Instead, Zeekr aims to carve out its own identity within the premium segment, filling a unique niche without Â?cannibalisingÂ? the sales of related brands.
Yan emphasises that each Geely-owned brand targets distinct audiences and follows different design philosophies.
Zeekr is concentrating on the premium end of the mainstream EV market, aiming to attract customers seeking high-end features without fully entering the luxury segment, where brands like Volvo and Polestar may operate more closely. This strategy seeks to expand Geely's reach across diverse market segments, using each brand's unique identity to maximise overall market share without internal competition.
The Zeekr 7X, a mid-sized SUV targeting the Tesla Model Y, is expected to arrive in Australia in the latter half of 2024. This model is key to Zeekr's ambition of capturing a significant share of the Australian EV market as the brand aims to establish itself among the top three or five EV brands nationally.
Andrew Haurissa, Zeekr Australia's head of marketing, has stated that the brand aspires to secure a prominent position in the competitive EV market. According to Haurissa, Tesla and BYD currently lead the electric vehicle sales in Australia, but the third position remains open. Zeekr hopes to fill this gap, leveraging the anticipated popularity of models like the 7X to achieve this goal.
With growing interest in premium EVs in Australia, Zeekr's strategy will likely focus on competitive pricing, strong feature offerings, and identifying market gaps. If successful, Zeekr could become a major player alongside established EV brands such as Tesla and BYD.
Zeekr is also actively expanding its presence in global markets, including Australia, where it is introducing a broader range of models aimed at various segments within the EV market. At the recent Sydney International EV Show, Zeekr showcased the high-performance 001 FR - an electric liftback sedan boasting an impressive 930kW quad-motor powertrain, highlighting its commitment to high-end, powerful EVs.
Additionally, Zeekr displayed the 007 luxury sedan, aimed at competing directly with Tesla's popular Model 3. This strategic expansion of its lineup in Australia demonstrates Zeekr's intention to cater to both performance-focused and luxury-seeking consumers in the growing EV market.
With these models, Zeekr is leveraging its appeal in the premium electric segment and aiming to establish a significant presence in Australia, as well as in other global markets.
