The growing presence of Chinese automakers in Thailand represents a significant milestone in collaborative efforts towards green mobility and the strengthening of ties with China, according to a Thai automotive industry expert.
Suroj Sangsnit, President of the Electric Vehicle Association of Thailand (EVAT), described the partnership as a testament to the systematic development of the electric vehicle ecosystem and a strategic step towards advancing shared environmental objectives.
In a recent interview with Xinhua, Suroj highlighted China's globally recognised expertise in electric vehicle technology, particularly in battery systems and large-scale industrial manufacturing. This capability is complemented by Thailand's geographical advantages, skilled workforce, and strong governmental support.
This synergy enables both nations to collaborate across the entire electric vehicle value chain, encompassing vehicle production, infrastructure development, and battery recycling.
The entry of Chinese manufacturers, offering advanced technology, competitive pricing, and rapid product deployment, has significantly enhanced the accessibility of electric vehicles for Thai consumers, thereby encouraging broader adoption. This development has also stimulated investment in supporting infrastructure, including charging stations, battery repair services, electric vehicle maintenance training, and components manufacturing.
In the first half of 2025, new registrations of fully electric passenger vehicles in Thailand rose by nearly 35% compared to the same period the previous year. Of these, Chinese brands accounted for almost 90%, according to official data.
In recent years, several Chinese automakers have established production facilities in Thailand, substantially advancing the country's ambition to become a regional hub for electric mobility.
Suroj highlighted EVAT's role in promoting regional integration within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) through the formation of a collaborative network with counterpart organisations.
The objective is to develop common standards and enable cross-border infrastructure, such as roaming capabilities for electric vehicle charging.
He further emphasised that electric vehicle cooperation will serve as a cornerstone of future partnerships.
He outlined plans for collaborative initiatives in technologies such as solid-state batteries, intelligent electric vehicle platforms, and battery recycling solutions, alongside the establishment of joint research and development centres in Thailand.
