DRB-Hicom in talks to assemble Audi vehicles in Malaysia
Bernama, 9 Sep '11

DRB-Hicom is in talks with Audi to assemble its cars in Malaysia, says group managing director Datuk Seri Mohd Khamil Jamil.

"We are the franchise holder (Audi) here that is one of the things in my key performance indicator (KPI)," he said when asked if there were plans to assemble Audi vehicles in Malaysia.

DRB-Hicom has been the local sole importer and distributor of Audi vehicles since 2003 through wholly-owned Euromobil, achieving a total sales of 745 units in the financial year 2011.

This accounted for a 55% increase from the previous year's 480 units, hence increasing the brand's market share in the luxury car segment to seven per cent.

Speaking to reporters after DRB-Hicom's annual general meeting today, Mohd Khamil said a certain sales units were needed to start a completely knocked down (CKD) production. "Looking at the numbers now, 700 to 800 units (Audi sales), it is not viable to do CKD," he said, adding that hopefully in the next five years (to start local assembling).

Mohd Khamil said DRB-Hicom also plans to have a ratio of 50:50 in revenue contribution from its automotive and property and services segments, which currently accounted for 50% and 40%, respectively.
