Road tax for electric vehicles (EVs) has been reduced in Cambodia. The new cost is determined by the age of the vehicle, with owners of new vehicles required to pay between US$ 25 and US$ 200, while those with vehicles at least ten years old will pay between US$ 15 and US$ 50.

According to an announcement by the Ministry of Economy and Finance recently, the new road tax rate applies to EVs classified under Article 4, such as small four-door cargo and passenger vehicles.

The Ministry stated: "The new rate will be based on the age of vehicles, with those up to five years old paying between 100,000 riel (US$ 25) and 800,000 riel (US$ 200), those between five and ten years old paying between 80,000 riel (US$ 20) and 400,000 riel (US$ 100), and those more than ten years old paying between 60,000 riel (US$ 15) and 200,000 riel (US$ 50)."

The statement added that the policy is consistent with the National Policy on the Development of Electric Vehicles 2024-2030.

One of the local EV owners, who has had a Toyota BZ4X for nearly two years, reported that he previously paid 500,000 riel (US$ 125) in road tax for his 201PS EV.

Under the new rate, the amount will be reduced to 300,000 riel (US$ 75). He also noted that while the new price is acceptable, a further reduction to 150,000 riel (US$ 37.5) would be preferable.

On 7th July, the Electricity Authority of Cambodia also reduced the cost of EV charging stations from 1,600 riel per kWh to 1,050 riel per kWh for AC (alternating current) and 1,350 riel per kWh for DC (direct current).

The Ministry of Public Works and Transport has stated that BYD from China, Toyota from Japan, and Tesla from the United States are among the electric car brands currently operating in Cambodia.
