Electric vehicles in the Kingdom are set to receive dedicated licence plates featuring a green 'EV' logo, a move announced by the Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT) in Cambodia.
The initiative is part of the government's strategy to make eco-friendly vehicles identifiable and support the country's transition to sustainable mobility. The new marking system will apply to all registered electric vehicles, including motorcycles, tricycles, and cars.
The green logo will be incorporated into both standard provincial plates and personalised special plates, providing a visual distinction between zero-emission vehicles and traditional internal combustion engine models.
The policy comes at a time of increasing electric vehicle adoption in Cambodia. The labelling system aligns with the National Policy on Electric Vehicle Development 2024-2030.
Under this roadmap, the government has set targets for the end of the decade: 30,000 electric cars, 720,000 electric motorcycles, and 20,000 electric three-wheelers.
To support the increase in EVs, the Ministry of Mines and Energy and the Electricity Authority of Cambodia are expanding the national charging network.
Mines and Energy Minister Keo Rottanak stated that by the end of 2025, Cambodia was deriving 63% of its power from clean energy. The government has also reduced import duties on EVs by 50% compared with regular vehicles.
