NSW expands EV fleet incentive to heavy vehicles with AUD 5 million funding
fleetevnews.com.au, 12 Jan '26
A government incentive provides fleet operators with an opportunity to expand the adoption of electric vehicles across operations in Australia, particularly in New South Wales, where the NSW Government has opened a new round of its EV fleets incentive program.
For the first time, eligibility has been extended to heavy vehicles up to 23 tons GVM (gross vehicle mass) also called GVW (gross vehicle weight).
The latest funding round provides AUD 5 million (US$ 3.35 million) in co-funding to assist organisations in addressing the upfront cost barriers associated with electrifying fleet vehicles and installing smart charging infrastructure. For fleet managers operating mixed or multi-class fleets, this represents an expansion of the program's scope.
Designed to support fleet deployments
The incentive targets organisations piloting EVs or scaling early deployments, offering support for the purchase or lease of up to 15 battery electric vehicles (BEVs) per applicant, in addition to associated charging infrastructure.
The funding is non-competitive and allocated on a first come, first served basis, remaining open until May 2026 or until the funds are fully expended. This structure allows fleet teams to proceed without the complexity of a traditional grant assessment process.
Available funding
Under the current round, eligible incentives include:
- AUD 5,000 per passenger vehicle or SUV (RRP AUD 40,000 or more)
- AUD 5,000 to AUD 8,000 for light commercial vehicles between 2.5 ton and 3.5 ton GVM
- AUD 10,000 to AUD 50,000 for heavy commercial vehicles between 3.5 ton and 23 ton GVM
- Up to 50% of charging infrastructure costs per charger port, capped at AUD 60,000, depending on charger and vehicle type
The inclusion of heavy vehicles reflects the growing application of EV technology across more demanding duty cycles. It supports fleets that have previously faced challenges in justifying the business case for electric trucks or larger vans.
Impact for NSW fleets
Since its inception, the EV fleets incentive program has awarded AUD 46 million in funding to support the deployment of more than 5,300 battery electric vehicles and 2,400 chargers. These vehicles represent 5.2% of all EV registrations in NSW.
Participating fleets have reported changes in operating costs, driver experience, and organisational sustainability credentials.
Relevance for national fleets
Although the program is specific to NSW, it is relevant for national fleet operators with vehicles garaged or operating in the state. Funding may be applied to region-specific deployments, pilot programmes, or the electrification of priority routes where EV suitability has been established.
With the inclusion of heavy vehicles, sectors such as local government, utilities, construction, waste management, logistics, and service fleets can apply support to decarbonisation plans without waiting for full fleet transitions.
Application process
Eligible businesses and organisations can confirm their eligibility and apply directly through the NSW Government's energy website. Given the first come, first served allocation of funding, fleet managers are advised to assess vehicle availability, charging requirements, and obtain internal approvals promptly.
This latest NSW incentive round provides an opportunity for fleets previously considering electrification to move from planning to deployment, including the use of heavier vehicles.
