Pakistan is making significant progress towards a greener and more sustainable future by embracing electric vehicles (EVs).

The government's commitment to promoting electric mobility is evident in the forthcoming National Electric Vehicle (NEV) policy, which is expected to be finalised by the end of November 2024.

Initially, the new EV policy was anticipated to be unveiled in October 2024. It is important to note that the previous federal government approved Pakistan's first EV Policy for four-wheelers on 22nd December 2020.

New EV policy

The new EV policy aims to:

- Promote Local Manufacturing: Encouraging domestic production of electric vehicles and components.
- Accelerate EV Adoption: Incentivising the purchase of electric vehicles through various measures.
- Develop Charging Infrastructure: Establishing a robust network of charging stations across the country.
- Reduce Carbon Emissions: Contributing to a cleaner and greener environment by reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

Minister for Industries and Production, Rana Tanveer Hussain, emphasised the government's commitment to this initiative, stating that it aligns with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's vision for a sustainable Pakistan.

The plan

To further incentivise the adoption of EVs, the government plans to allocate US$ 4 billion in funding. This investment will be used to provide subsidies for electric two-wheelers, making them more affordable for the general public.

Additionally, 100 electric bikes will be distributed free of charge to top students across the country, recognising their academic achievements.

The government is also working to expand the EV charging infrastructure. Plans are underway to establish 40 charging stations along motorways and an additional 300 stations at key locations across the country. This will facilitate long-distance travel and alleviate range anxiety concerns for EV owners.

By implementing these measures, Pakistan aims to position itself as a leader in electric vehicle adoption in South Asia. The government's commitment to sustainable transportation and clean energy will play a crucial role in shaping the country's future.
