SAIC Motor-CP mulls move into hybrid pickups
Bangkok Post, 22 Dec '25
Chinese-Thai joint venture SAIC Motor-CP, the manufacturer of MG vehicles, is exploring the development of hybrid electric pickups to better align with the lifestyles of Thai drivers.
The company has initiated a feasibility study on hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) as part of its broader push into new energy vehicles, following the launch of the diesel-powered MG Extender and the fully electric MG Maxus eTerron 9.
Pongsak Lertruedeewattanavong, vice-president of MG Sales Thailand, stated, "Hybrid pickups are expected to have strong potential in Thailand."
He explained that pickup buyers in Thailand often drive in rural or remote areas where charging infrastructure is limited, making fully electric pickups less practical. Hybrid models, which do not rely solely on fuel and avoid the need for charging, could offer a more suitable solution amid concerns over fuel price volatility.
MG's strategy reflects the diverse lifestyles of Thai drivers, with the company working to provide multiple vehicle types to meet varying demands, according to Mr Lertruedeewattanavong.
Looking ahead, MG is entering its second decade in Thailand under its "Glocal Strategy," a blend of global technology and local consumer behaviour. The initiative aims to elevate Thailand's automotive industry to international standards, with improvements across services, marketing, and customer engagement, stated Mr Lertruedeewattanavong.
At the Thailand International Motor Expo, which concluded on 10th December, MG ranked seventh among the top ten car brands.
