UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT) has unveiled its latest developments in hybrid and motorsports-inspired vehicles, introducing the Vios Hybrid and the GR Corolla Auto for the Malaysian market in 2026, reflecting the company's continued focus on these segments across Southeast Asia.
2026 Vios Hybrid
The 2026 Vios Hybrid is offered in Malaysia in two variants: the 1.5-litre HEV AT, priced at MYR 103,900 (US$ 25,300), and the 1.5-litre HEV GR Sport AT, priced at MYR 109,900, on-the-road without insurance. Both models feature Toyota's fourth-generation hybrid powertrain, with a claimed fuel consumption of 3.6 litres per 100 km (NEDC). The closest competitor is the Honda City e:HEV sedan, which is priced at MYR 111,900.
Although UMWT has not yet released detailed powertrain specifications for the Malaysian market, Thailand's market data provides insight into the Vios Hybrid configuration.
In Thailand, the Vios Hybrid is powered by a 1,496 cc 2NR-VEX naturally aspirated inline-four petrol engine, producing 91 PS at 5,500 rpm and 121 Nm between 4,000-4,800 rpm. This is paired with an 80 PS/141 Nm electric motor, powered by a 0.7 kWh lithium-ion battery located beneath the rear seats, delivering a combined output of 111 PS to the front wheels through an e-CVT automatic transmission.
By comparison, the Honda City e:HEV employs a 98 PS/127 Nm 1.5-litre Atkinson-cycle petrol engine that primarily functions as a generator, coupled with a 108 PS/253 Nm motor, achieving a claimed fuel consumption of 3.77 litres per 100 km.
Design and Features
The 1.5-litre HEV variant retains the standard Vios front fascia, accented with a dark chrome upper grille. Interior upgrades include ambient lighting, a larger 10.1-inch Digital Audio infotainment system supporting wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and an audible vehicle approach notice to alert pedestrians and cyclists.
The GR Sport variant introduces a GR Sport-specific front bumper and grille with aerokit, 17-inch wheels fitted with Continental PremiumContact 6 tyres (205/50R17), and a variant-specific suspension tune. Inside, the GR Sport features leather and suede-upholstered front seats with silver accents against a black interior, paired with the same upgraded 10.1-inch infotainment system.
2026 GR Corolla Auto
UMWT has also launched the 2026 GR Corolla with an automatic transmission in Malaysia, priced at MYR 378,950 (US$ 92,500) on-the-road without insurance. Available through selected GR Garage dealerships, the GR Corolla Auto combines motorsports-derived performance with everyday usability.
The vehicle is equipped with an eight-speed GR Direct Automatic Transmission (8 Auto GR-DAT) designed for rapid and precise shifts while providing smooth and confident daily driving. The updated GR Corolla features a larger 10-inch display, a ‘Drive' mode for smooth acceleration with intelligent gear selection, a ‘Sport' mode with sharper throttle response and aggressive shift logic, and a sequential-style ‘M-mode' for enhanced driver engagement. Launch Start Control enables optimal acceleration from a stationary position.
The suspension and anti-lock braking system have been refined to improve stability and cornering performance, resulting in faster lap times without changes to engine output. Datuk Ravindran K., president of UMW Toyota Motor, stated that the GR Corolla Auto allows more Malaysians to experience the raw performance and intensity of a race-bred vehicle without compromising the GR driving character.
Thailand Market Significance
Thailand continues to serve as a benchmark for Toyota's hybrid and GR vehicle specifications in the region. Detailed Vios Hybrid specifications from Thailand help inform expectations in Malaysia and other neighbouring markets, emphasising the kingdom's role as a reference point for technical standards and hybrid powertrain deployment across Southeast Asia.
