BYD set to unveil new MPV at Chengdu Auto Show on August 30th
BYD will officially unveil its new MPV on August 30th, 2024, at the Chengdu Auto Show. Speculation around the car's name suggests it could be called "Zhou," as the previously rumored name "Tang Max" seems unlikely due to BYD's existing SUV range under the Tang name.
Lu Tian, General Manager of BYD's Dynasty sales division, hinted at a new dynasty name for the MPV, stating, "the curtain of the new dynasty will be opened" in a social media post.
Design and features
Photographs leaked on social media of the heavily camouflaged MPV reveal a silhouette longer than five meters, likely with a three-meter wheelbase, making it a spacious vehicle. It features an imposing grille, a signature design trait of the Dynasty series.
Interior shots show a seven-seat layout configured as 2+2+3, emphasising comfort and space. The front includes three screens: a digital LCD instrument panel, a central infotainment screen, and a passenger entertainment screen.
The second row comprises two independent, electrically adjustable seats with armrests and airplane-style tray tables on the backs of the front seats.
Controls on the back of the centre console and a possible storage compartment suggest added convenience for rear passengers. A small passage between the second-row seats allows easy access to the third row, where each passenger is equipped with an adjustable headrest.
Performance and technology
The new MPV is expected to utilise BYD's DM 5.0 technology, featuring a hybrid powertrain.
Likely options include a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine paired with an electric motor, a combination used in BYD's larger PHEV models, such as the forthcoming Han DM-i. The BYD472ZQB 1.5T engine offers a maximum power output of 115 kW and may be coupled with a 200 kW peak power electric motor.
Media reports indicate the new MPV could have an all-electric range of up to 200 km, significantly more than any other models using the DM 5.0 technology.
Expected pricing and availability
Prices for the new BYD MPV are expected to range between CNY 250,000 and 350,000 (US$ 34,450 to 48,200). Further details will be revealed at the Chengdu Auto Show, but it remains unclear whether the event will mark just an unveiling or a full market launch.
