IBC to finish Titan project feasibility study with China in 2026
Tempo, 2 Feb '26
Indonesia Battery Corporation (IBC) aims to complete feasibility study documents for its integrated battery industry project with a Chinese consortium within 2026.
The study constitutes the initial stage of the Titan project, a downstream initiative intended to develop Indonesia's role in global battery production.
IBC President Director Aditya Farhan Arif stated that the Titan project continues the company's mandate to develop the country's nickel downstream industry.
Following previous explorations of a partnership with LG, IBC is collaborating with Aneka Tambang, Indonesia Battery Corporation, and HYD, a joint venture comprising Huayou, EVE Energy and Daaz Bara Lestari.
"IBC's work on the Dragon and Titan projects follows prior engagement with LG and now continues with Huayou," Aditya stated after signing the collaboration agreement at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources on January 30th, 2026.
The partnership is intended to establish production facilities and develop domestic technological capabilities. Aditya emphasised that Indonesia should move beyond being a raw material supplier and develop the capacity to produce batteries domestically.
"The company is committed to technology development. In the future, this technology is expected to be owned by Indonesia," he further added, noting that the collaboration will function as a platform for knowledge transfer within the national battery industry.
The next phase involves a joint feasibility study to assess technical, economic, and industrial readiness.
"Following the completion of this study, a definitive agreement will be executed, marking the subsequent stages of the collaboration with Huayou," Aditya explained. The study is expected to be completed within the year and will guide investment and project development decisions.
Previously, Aneka Tambang, Industri Baterai Indonesia, and HYD had signed a collaboration framework for the battery industry. HYD comprises Huayou, EVE Energy, and Daaz Bara Lestari.
The signing ceremony was attended by Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia, Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasamita, and several directors of state-owned enterprises.
"This agreement is the result of a negotiation process initiated during my tenure as head of the Investment Coordinating Board. The focus has been on establishing an integrated electric vehicle battery ecosystem," Bahlil stated.
The Titan project is planned to achieve a production capacity of up to 20 gigawatt hours, with an estimated investment of US$ 6 billion and the potential to create 10,000 jobs.
While project specifics remain subject to the feasibility study, the batteries are intended to support both electric vehicles and renewable energy initiatives, including a planned 100-gigawatt solar power programme.
"This project includes EV batteries as well as solar thermal storage," Bahlil noted, indicating the involvement of domestic companies in technology development.
The government is also supporting local participation, including companies in West Java and the development of mines, smelters, and downstream facilities in East Halmahera, North Maluku.
"If implemented, Indonesia would be among the few countries, alongside China, to establish a fully integrated EV battery ecosystem," Bahlil further added.
