After nearly two decades of operations in Vietnam, Piaggio Vietnam has developed beyond its role as a motorcycle manufacturer, functioning as a strategic hub within the Piaggio Group's global production and distribution network.
The increase in production reflects enhancements in manufacturing capabilities at the Phu Tho complex, supporting its role within Piaggio's global network for scooters, engines and spare parts under the Piaggio, Vespa and Aprilia brands.
The factory supplies scooters, engines, and spare parts across markets in the Asia-Pacific region, as well as selected European and American markets. This operational development indicates a broader value-chain shift towards Asia, positioning Vietnam as a key component within Piaggio's global manufacturing framework.
Long-term strategy
The stability and predictability of Vietnam's policy environment have provided a foundation for Piaggio's long-term investment decisions. In a capital-intensive industry with extended investment cycles, corporate planning is supported by a consistent political and economic framework.
Since establishing operations in Phu Tho (formerly Vinh Phuc province) in 2007 as a wholly foreign-invested enterprise, Piaggio has maintained a focus on developing local capabilities. The Group has implemented an operational philosophy based on four core values: attention to individuals, emphasis on quality, long-term vision, and customer focus. Rather than prioritising short-term cost optimisation, Piaggio has introduced advanced technologies, including anti-lock braking systems and next-generation iGet engines.
The expansion of manufacturing capabilities is also reflected in the increase in production scale, supported by a new investment certificate for the Phu Tho factory. The Vietnam complex functions as one of the Group's operational and research and development (R&D) centres globally.
Piaggio's investment efficiency aligns with the Vietnamese government's foreign investment strategy, supported by the mid-term orientations of the Investment Law and relevant support mechanisms.
Global standards
Operational developments in Vietnam demonstrate that production operations comply with the standards associated with Piaggio Group's 141-year heritage. They reflect the integration of Italian technology, manufacturing processes, quality assurance, and the expertise of the Vietnamese workforce.
In Vietnam, Piaggio operates a full-capacity assembly plant, an advanced engine production plant, and the only Southeast Asia-based R&D centre, supporting the Group's regional operations. Through an integrated production model and increasing process digitalisation, operational efficiency and supply-chain management have been improved.
Piaggio's "Made in Vietnam" product lines, including Vespa, Piaggio, and Aprilia, maintain Italian design standards and comply with emission regulations from Euro 3 to Euro 5+, alongside local regulatory requirements, serving both domestic and international markets.
From a supply-chain perspective, Piaggio's strategy has contributed to changes in the local supporting industry. Investment in advanced engine production and the Southeast Asia-based R&D centre has increased localisation rates and integrated Vietnamese suppliers into the global value network. This represents a shift from assembly to technological autonomy and product development, improving time-to-market and operational flexibility.
Supply-chain strategy
Vietnam serves as a key operational base and a critical node for supply-chain resilience in the Asia-Pacific region. The Group's strategy has prioritised operational autonomy to ensure business continuity amid a volatile global economy. The manufacturing base in Vietnam supports operations across multiple Asia-Pacific markets, with workforce capabilities supporting complex manufacturing processes.
The attainment of Authorised Economic Operator certification by Piaggio Vietnam facilitates more efficient customs procedures and enhances supply-chain security. This certification allows flexible resource allocation while meeting regulatory requirements for European and American markets, reinforcing Vietnam's role as the Group's regional operational hub.
Piaggio has invested in a people-centric corporate culture, recognising its workforce as a key operational factor. Workforce contributions have been central to the company's operational outcomes.
The company contributes to the local community through manufacturing activities, employment, and social responsibility initiatives.
These operational developments reflect a functioning industrial ecosystem in Vietnam, encompassing policy, workforce, technology, and supply chains. They support Piaggio's strategy of anchoring Asia-Pacific operations in Vietnam while supplying both domestic and international markets under consistent quality standards.
Piaggio products produced at the Phu Tho factory integrate Italian design and technology with Vietnamese manufacturing processes, contributing to the country's role as an industrial centre within the Asia-Pacific region.
