Johor Chief Minister Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi has stated on social media that the state government is in the final stages of discussions with Gotion High-Tech to establish an electric vehicle (EV) battery manufacturing facility in Johor, according to local reports.
Gotion is a Chinese battery manufacturer that is part-owned by the Volkswagen Group.
"The establishment of the facility would position the state as a regional hub for electric vehicle battery production and energy storage systems. The state government sees the move as a long-term investment that is expected to directly benefit Johoreans, in line with the aspirations of the green energy transition and sustainable economic development," he said.
He added that Gotion would act as the lead original equipment manufacturer and technology provider, covering battery pack manufacturing, module integration, and other high-value activities across the battery technology and energy management value chain.
"God willing, this collaboration will support the green energy transition agenda, strengthen Johor's economic competitiveness and ensure that the people will benefit through job creation, higher incomes and a more sustainable future," Onn Hafiz said.
In May 2025, Sapura Industrial Berhad announced a joint venture with China's Zhejiang Zhongze Precision Technology to manufacture EV battery components in Malaysia, focusing on high-precision storage battery casings.
Under the arrangement, Sapura Industrial Berhad will manage corporate, licensing, environmental and regulatory matters, as well as identify a suitable site for the facility. Zhejiang Zhongze Precision Technology will provide machinery, technical expertise, training and customer support.
