India's electric vehicle (EV) market continues to gather momentum as manufacturers expand their offerings and investments.
The entry of VinFast, Vietnam's electric vehicle manufacturer, adds a significant new participant to the segment.
Part of the Vin Group, VinFast has inaugurated its first manufacturing facility in India at Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, backed by an investment of US$ 500 million, signalling a long-term commitment to the country's EV market.
The facility is not a completely knocked down (CKD) operation. The Tamil Nadu plant is VinFast's third operational manufacturing site globally and its first outside Vietnam.
Constructed within a short timeframe, the factory has commenced production of the VF6 and VF7 electric SUVs. It has an initial annual capacity of 50,000 units, with plans to scale up to 150,000 vehicles.
The plant is also positioned as an export hub, serving markets including South Africa, the Middle East, and other African countries. This strategy places Tamil Nadu as an integral part of VinFast's global supply chain.
VinFast's expansion in India extends beyond manufacturing. The company has already opened showrooms in several states and plans to operate 35 dealerships across 27 cities by the end of the year.
To support after-sales operations, VinFast has partnered with MyTVS to establish 120 service centres nationwide, aimed at providing comprehensive maintenance and customer support from the outset.
VinFast's operations are supported by its parent company, Vingroup, Vietnam's largest private conglomerate. Established in the 1990s, Vingroup has diversified interests spanning real estate, healthcare, education, technology, and manufacturing, with a market value exceeding US$ 7.5 billion.
Its key businesses include Vinhomes, Vietnam's largest real estate developer; Vinmec Hospitals, which provides advanced healthcare services; VinUni, a private university with international partnerships; and VinAI and VinBigData, which focus on artificial intelligence, data analytics, and advanced manufacturing. This integrated ecosystem enables VinFast to align technology development, infrastructure, and mobility solutions as it enters new markets such as India.
Why this matters for India
VinFast's entry goes beyond the launch of another EV brand. It highlights India's growing role in the global electric mobility transition.
By establishing local manufacturing alongside dealership and service networks, VinFast aims to offer electric vehicles produced under the Make in India initiative for both domestic consumption and export markets.
The road ahead
VinFast's approach centres on local production, partnerships, and long-term expansion. Supported by Vingroup's resources and industrial base, the Tamil Nadu facility marks the beginning of what the company positions as a sustained commitment to electric mobility in one of the world's fastest-growing automotive markets. The move underscores increasing global confidence in India as a manufacturing and export base for next-generation vehicles.
