Skoda evaluates local EV launch plans by 2027-28 with domestic suppliers
Business Standard, 10 Oct '25
Skoda Auto India, a subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, is assessing the launch of an electric vehicle with localised sourcing, an official stated on 8th October, 2025.
According to the official, the company plans to enter the Indian electric vehicle market by 2027-28. Skoda currently offers a global portfolio of electric vehicles positioned in the premium segment.
Ashis Gupta, Brand Director of Skoda Auto India, stated that the company is considering the launch of an electric vehicle in India during 2027-28, following the establishment of a local supplier base. He added that this timeframe would allow the development of supplier infrastructure alongside advancements in the country's charging network.
Gupta noted that the electric vehicle segment accounts for approximately 10 to 12% of the overall automotive market and continues to expand. By 2027-28, an appropriate policy framework for electric vehicles is also expected to be in place.
Skoda Auto India currently offers four models in the domestic market - three sedans and one small SUV - with a market share of 1.7% by volume. Between January and September 2025, the company sold 53,000 units across these models. Gupta stated that the small SUV model has contributed to the increase in the company's market share.
The four models currently offered in India are the Kylac, Slavia, Kushaq, and Kodiaq.
Gupta mentioned that the reduction in the Goods and Services Tax (GST) rate has drawn additional customers. The small SUV is subject to an 18% GST rate, while the sedans attract a 40% rate.
The company currently operates 315 customer touchpoints across India, with plans to expand this number to 350 by 2025, focusing on Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities.
With its production base in Pune, Skoda Auto India exports vehicles to markets in the Middle East and Africa.
Gupta stated that the company aims to maintain its market share and retain its position as the seventh-largest car manufacturer in the country.
